AS ALL GENTLEMEN KNOW, "A GENTLEMEN'S BOAT SHOULD BE AS LONG IN FEET AS HE IS OLD IN YEARS " HOWEVER THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER SORT OF FROWNED ON THAT IDEA WITH WORDS LIKE "WHAT DO YOU THINK WE ARE, A GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT."? SO I HAD TO LOOK ROUND FOR SOMETHING A BIT SMALLER..

I WAS COMING BACK FROM A DAYS FISHING AT "MOTITIAN ISLAND 8 MILE OF THE COAST" ONE WET COLD DAY IN MY OPEN CENTRE CONSOLE PONTOON BOAT AND THOUGHT HOW NICE IT WOULD BE TO HAVE A CABIN TO DUCK INTO IN THESE SORTS OF CONDITIONS. SO I SORTED OUT A LIST OF MUST HAVES IN THE NEXT BOAT AND STARTED LOOKING ROUND TO FIND A DESIGN TO FIT THE BILL.

THE REQUIREMENTS WERE (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER) A TRAILER BOAT WITH OVER NIGHT CAPACITY. ROOM TO FIT A CAPSTAIN, A CABIN WITH LOUNGING AREAS, A COCKPIT WITH ROOM TO MOVE AROUND. A VERY GOOD FISH FINDER/ DEPTH SOUNDER, G.P.S. THE ABILITY TO MAKE A COFFEE AND SOME WHERE TO STORE ALL THAT FISH STILL OUT THERE WITH MY NAME ON.

I HAD BUILT A 25 FOOT DISPLACEMENT CRAFT TO USE IN COOK STRAIGHT (A BIT OF WATER WITH A FEARSOME REPUTATION) . AND THAT WAS O.K. BUT A BIT SLOW FOR THE SORTS OF DISTANCES I WANTED TO GO TO GET INTO THE BETTER FISHING GROUNDS. NOW I LIVE IN THE BAY OF PLENTY.

DEVLIN HAD WHAT LOOKED LIKE THE SORT OF BOAT I HAD IN MIND( WITH A FEW KIWI MODS.) SO I ORDERED THE STUDY PRINT. STUDIED HARD, CHECKED OUT THE HOME BUILT SECTION OF THE WEB SITE .THEN BACK IN AUGUST 2002 I ORDERED A SET OF PLANS, WHICH PROMPTLY GOT LOST IN THE POST, SO AFTER A SLOW START FINALLY GOT TO CHOPPING WOOD

WITH THE PLANS IN IMPERIAL MEASUREMENTS, I HAD TO GET THE OLD BRAIN WORKING, WE WENT METRIC HERE IN NEW ZEALAND A LONG TIME AGO. STILL ALL THE MEASURING TAPES ON THE MARKET HAVE IMPERIAL ON ONE SIDE.

THE BUILDING PROCESS IS QUITE STRAIGHT FORWARD WITH THE STITCH AND GLASS METHOD ONE OF THE REASONS I CHOSE THIS DESIGN AND I ONLY FOUND ONE MISTAKE ON THE PLANS, STATION 4 OF THE BOTTOM LAYOUT SHOULD READ 3-1-1 AND NOT 3-0-1 THE OTHER CONFUSING BIT WAS THE WEB SITE SEAM TO SHOW THE BOATS BEING BUILT UPSIDE DOWN. BUT THE PLANS SAY BUILD IT THE RIGHT WAY UP?? STILL SOLVED THAT PROBLEM BY DOING A BIT OF BOTH. NO BIG DEAL REALLY. THE OTHER CONFUSING BIT WAS SORTING OUT THE ANGLE TO PUT IN THE MOTOR TRANSOM. MINE IS A BIT SHALLOW SO HAVE HAD TO ADD A WEDGE UNDER THE MOTOR.

NOW TO THE KIWI MODS! I NARROWED UP THE SIDE DECKS TO ABOUT 8 " ENOUGH ROOM TO WALK ROUND IF YOU REALLY HAVE TO. THIS GIVES MORE ROOM IN THE CABIN, AND PUSHED THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT WINDOWS OUT TO GIVE MORE ROOM ON THE ALTERED DASH FOR SOME SERIOUS TOYS. IT ADDED A BIT OF STYLE TO THE SHAPE I THINK, AND I THEN CARRIED THE SIDES OF THE CABIN AFT INTO THE COCKPIT TO GIVE A BIT OF SHELTER THERE AND SLOPED THE BACK OF THE SIDE WINDOWS TO MATCH . THESE I MADE SLIDING FOR VENTILATION. I SHIFTED THE GALLEY TO IN BEHIND THE HELM SEAT( WELL IN MY CASE A 2 BURNER AND GRILL GAS COOKER) THIS LEFT THE WHOLE OF THE PORT SIDE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE INTO A LOUNGING AREA WITH LOTS OF STORAGE UNDER.



 

THIS SEAT IS L SHAPED WITH THE STARTING AND HOUSE BATTERIES UNDER THE RETURN PART OF THE L AGAINST THE AFT CABIN BULKHEAD (DOWN LOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOAT) AND THE BATTERY SWITCHES ARE CLOSE AT HAND AND INSIDE. THESE SWITCHES ARE ONE FOR EACH BATTERY, ONE LINK, A VOLTAGE SENSITIVE RELAY, THE CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR THE CAPSTAIN AND A DC OUTLET ALL TOGETHER ON ONE BOARD. THE DC OUTLET DOUBLES AS A BATTERY CHARGING INLET AS WELL. ALL NICE AND TIDY.

THE CABIN SIDE PANELS RUN DOWN BELOW THE CARLINE BY ABOUT 1 FOOT THESE HAVE OVAL SHAPED SLOTS CUT IN THEM AND FORM PACELL TRAYS EACH SIDE OF THE CABIN, I HAVE DONE THE SAME THING IN THE COCKPIT , THESE WORK EXTRA WELL IN BOTH AREAS. IN THE ROOF OF THE CABIN I ADDED TWO 4 X 1 INCH BEAMS THESE HAVE HAND HOLDS CUT INTO THEM AND RUN THE FULL LENGTH OF THE CABIN THE DOWN THE JOINTS IN THE FRONT WINDOWS ADDING STRENGTH TO THIS AREA. ON THE PORT SIDE OF THIS ROOF WE HAVE A SMALL BEAM AND A FALSE ROOF ABOUT 8 INCHES WIDE THIS HAS TWO CABIN DOWN LIGHTS AND A STERIO SPEAKER LET IN FLUSH. ON THE STBD. SIDE THE FALSE ROOF FINISHES SHORT OF THE SKIPPERS SEAT SO THE SKIPPER DON'T BANG HIS HEAD ON IT WHEN HE STANDS UP, AGAIN WITH LIGHTS AND STERIO SPEAKERS LET IN.

THE FRONT WELL ANCHOR DECK CAME IN FOR A FEW CHANGES AS WELL THE FLOOR WAS TAKEN DOWN ABOUT 5 INCHES A LARGER BREAST HOOK WAS INSTALLED AND BEEFED UP TO TAKE A SMALL CAPSTAIN THEN IN THE TOP OF THE ANCHOR LKR. BULKHEAD I CUT A SMALL DROP OPEN DOOR THE GIVE BETTER ACCESS TO THIS AREA. NO MORE CLAMBERING ROUND THE CABIN SIDES, I FIND THIS SMALL DOOR GIVES GOOD VENTILATION UNDERWAY WITH THE DOOR OPEN BUT THE HATCH CLOSED. I HAVE PUT A SMALL FOOT HOLD ON THE BACK OF THE BULKHEAD ALSO TO GIVE A HAND (FOOT) UP INTO THE ANCHOR WELL, BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO GET UP THERE VERY MUCH, I FIND ALL ANCHORING CAN BE ACHIEVED STANDING IN THE HATCHWAY, THE ANCHOR SWITCH IS ON THE BACK OF THE BULKHEAD JUST INSIDE THE SMALL DOOR.



 

THE COCKPIT AND TRANSOM CAME IN FOR A FEW CHANGES ALSO. I SHIFTED THE FUEL TANK FROM THE MIDDLE OF THIS AREA TO ONE EACH SIDE OF THE LONGITUDINALS AND PUT A FLAT SOLE BETWEEN THE TWO FOR A WET STORAGE AREA, YOU KNOW WET SUITE. FENDERS. ROPES, DIVE GEAR ETC. ALL THE STUFF YOU DON'T WANT IN THE CABIN. A BOARDING PLATFORM WAS ADDED TO THE TRANSOM, WE DO A LOT OF DIVING AND YOU NEED TO COME AND GO EASILY. ALONG WITH THIS I CUT A STEP-THRU ACCESS IN THE PORT SIDE OF THE TRANSOM AND FINISHED IT OF WITH THE SAME TRIM AS THE REST OF THE BOAT. JARRA OUTSIDE NZ. RIMU INSIDE. THIS IS GREAT FOR GETTING INTO AND OUT OF THE BOAT ON ITS TRAILER TO . ON THE STBD SIDE OF THE COCKPIT WE HAVE A SEAT WITH A LIFT UP LID. THIS IS WHERE THE PORTA LOO SITS, DURING THE DAY

BACK TO THE CABIN. THE DASH BULKHEAD CAME IN FOR SOME CHANGES TO ACCOMMODATE ALL THE TOYS I WANTED TO PUT IN. THE PORT SIDE WAS CUT DOWN A BIT TO OPEN UP THAT SIDE , ROUNDED AND CAPPED OFF WITH A BIT OF TRIM. THE STBD. SIDE WAS CUT DOWN AND A FALSE FRONT ADDED 6 INCHES BACK TO ALLOW ROOM FOR THE HYDRAULIC STEERING UNIT. THEN THIS IS SLOPED UP TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE FRONT WINDOW TO ACCOMMODATE THE TOYS. THIS DASH PANEL HINGES BACK FROM THE TOP TO ALLOW EASY ACCESS TO ALL THE BUS BOARDS AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND STUFF UNDER THE DASH..

THE TOYS ARE TWO ENGINE INSTRUMENTS. A BULGE PUMP SWITCH. 2 D.C OUTLETS, A 12 SWITCH CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL FOR NAV. LIGHTS, INTERIOR LIGHTS, DECK LIGHTS , WIPERS, ETC. ETC. A V.H.F. RADIO. AN AM/FM TAPE DECK RADIO. CD PLAYER ,A GSP HOOKED UP TO A DUEL FREQUENCY SOUNDER THE SOUNDER HAS SOME NAV. FUNCTIONS IN IT SO ALL THE INFO. CAN BE ON ONE SCREEN.. A SECOND GPS WITH A FUEL COMPUTER HOOKED INTO THE FUEL LINE. A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND A SMALL COMPASS ON TOP OF THE DASH. ON THE BACK OF THE DASH IS A NIGHT LIGHT OVER THE FRONT BUNK.

UNDER THE HELM SEAT IS AN INSULATED ICE BOX WITH MORE STORAGE UNDER. THAT AGAIN, AND THE GALLEY IS JUST ONE SMALL KNIFE DRAWER AND TWO STORAGE BINS. UNDER A SMALL BENCH THIS AREA IS STILL DEVELOPING

WITH ALL THE CHOPPING AND CHANGING I THOUGHT IT PRUDENT TO ADD MORE FLOORS THAN WAS ON THE PLANS ALL BOLTED THRU THE HARD WOOD KEEL AND SOME EXTRA FLOORS WERE ADDED AFT OF THE CABIN BULKHEAD UNDER THE WET DECK STORAGE. I FIBERGLASSED THE WHOLE OF THE INSIDE OF THE HULL AS WELL AS THE OUTSIDE. AND ADDED EXTRA PART BULKHEADS INTO STORAGE AREAS FULLY ATTACHED TO THE HULL. THE WATER TANKS HAVE NOT HAD THERE LIDS GLASSED ON AS YET SO WE ONLY CARRY WATER IN MOVEABLE CONTAINERS AT THIS STAGE. (DON'T SEEM TO DRINK A LOT OF WATER ON OUR TRIPS, MORE THE OTHER STUFF)) ALTHOUGH I ADDED A BIT OF LEAD UNDER THE FRONT CABIN SOLE WE ARE STILL A BIT LIGHT.

I OPTED FOR THE YAMAHA 90 WHICH IS MORE THAN ENOUGH POWER. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE INSTALLATION WAS THE COCKPIT LONGITUDINALS WERE ABOUT 2 INCHES TOO CLOSE TOGETHER TO ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC STEERING RAM FULL TRAVEL BOTH WAYS SO WE SOLVED THAT BY CUTTING A HOLE IN ONE SIDE AND JUST GLASS CLOTHING THE OUT SIDE. WITH THE ENGINE IN THE TILT POSITION IT LOOKED LIKE THE ENGINE LID MIGHT LOOK A BIT HIGH, SO I SLOPPED THE FRONT , BACK AND SIDES IN AND IT LOOKS OK. I HAVE A SMALL DROP DOWN TABLE HINGED ONTO THE FRONT OF THIS LID . THIS ACTS AS BAIT BOARD/DRINKS TABLE/DINING TABLE ETC.

THE NEXT ADDITION WILL BE SOME SORT OF BIMINI OVER THE COCKPIT TO STAY OUT OF THE RAIN (AND SUN) I WILL ADD SOME ROD HOLDERS TO THE TOP OF THIS ALSO TO KEEP THE RODS OUT OF THE WAY WHEN NOT IN USE.

I FIND THE CRAFT EASY TO HANDLE BY MYSELF. LAUNCH/RETRIEVE. A REAL COMFORT ON A ROUGH DAY SITTING IN THE CABIN, ENOUGH ROOM TO MOVE AROUND WHEN FISHING AND THE LOUNGE SEAT IN THE MAIN CABIN IS A NICE PLACE TO HAVE A SNOOZE WAY FROM THE ACTIVITY IN THE COCKPIT.

HAVE DONE TWO OVER NIGHTERS SO FAR. ONE TO MAYOR ISLAND THAT'S 25 MILE OFF SHORE. TWO HR OUT AND TWO HRS BACK AND ONE TO MOTITI, THE ISLAND I MENTIONED AT THE START.

I HAVE BEEN SURPRISED BY THE NUMBER OF FAVORABLE COMMENTS AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO RECOGNIZE HER AS A DEVLIN EVEN WITH THE CHANGES.

BUILDING TIME FOR ME WAS 16 MONTHS (PART TIME) AND I SPENT ABOUT $35,000 N.Z. HARD CASH TO GET HER ON THE WATER, THAT'S HULL, MOTOR, AND ELECTRICS. ALTHOUGH I HAD A BIT OF STUFF PUT ASIDE FOR THE PROJECT. AND CALLED IN A FEW FAVORS TO KEEP THE COST DOWN. I MADE EVERYTHING MYSELF, EXCEPT THE SLIDING SIDE WINDOWS. AND I MEAN EVERYTHING, DECK FITTINGS, CLEATS, BOW FITTING, FUEL TANKS, PITCH SHIPS WHEEL, HAND RAILS, ICE BOX HELM SEAT, ETC.

AM I HAPPY WITH HER? YOU BET !! VERY VERY COMFORTABLE AT 4000 REVS DOING 13/14 KNOTS, FLAT OUT AT 22 KNOTS, (NO WATER BALLAST) THE PROP COULD PROBABLE HAVE AN INCH TAKEN OF THE PITCH.. AND THE SHELTER IN THE CABIN IS JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR ON THAT COLD WET DAY 2 YEARS AGO.
