To begin this project I read lots of books and magazines for a period of about 9 years before attempting to build my first boat. I learned about each of the construction processes and decided on the stitch and glue method. I chose it mainly for its simple nature and ease of assembly. Having said that there are other fantastic benefits that need pointed out:

First and foremost is the fact that the entire boat is fused together making each and every piece contribute to the overall rigidity of the boat.

Secondly there are no tight corners that concentrate stresses or nooks and crannies that collect dirt and moisture. Tight corners are impossible to finish plus you can't scrub the dirt out which makes these areas unsightly. Using this boat as an example in 10 minutes with a bucket of soapy water and sponge you can wash this boat and dry it and it will sparkle inside and out. Try that with a lapstrake or ribbed hulled boat!

Thirdly it has to be the easiest construction method to finish. The smooth surfaces are just a joy to paint.

Now this is not to say that the other methods are not worthy as 1000's of years of boat building will attest. One of the greatest things about building your own boat is that you can choose what method suits you best. For me the stitch and glue method makes a lot of sense.

I followed Sam’s plans completely except for the gunwale/sheer area. I decided to cap the exposed plywood edge to give this area a dressier appearance. Other than that Sam's, plans were perfect the pieces fit together the first try.

The only problem I encountered was that life kept getting in the way of my boat building. This is the only excuse I have for this project taking 8 months to complete. It was an enjoyable time though watching each and every piece come together to create something beautiful.

I have rowed the boat around our local lake several times now and have found it to be great fun. Even with my 6'4" frame it just scoots along with almost no effort. With the leathered oars you can row in absolute silence.

I plan to sell the boat to finance the building of an Oarling. Next will be the Winter Wren 2 after that who knows…
