To begin this project I read lots of books and
magazines for a period of about 9 years before
attempting to build my first boat. I learned about
each of the construction processes and decided on
the stitch and glue method. I chose it mainly for
its simple nature and ease of assembly. Having said
that there are other fantastic benefits that need
pointed out:
First and foremost is the fact that the entire
boat is fused together making each and every piece
contribute to the overall rigidity of the boat.
Secondly there are no tight corners that
concentrate stresses or nooks and crannies that
collect dirt and moisture. Tight corners are
impossible to finish plus you can't scrub the dirt
out which makes these areas unsightly. Using this
boat as an example in 10 minutes with a bucket of
soapy water and sponge you can wash this boat and
dry it and it will sparkle inside and out. Try that
with a lapstrake or ribbed hulled boat!
Thirdly it has to be the easiest construction
method to finish. The smooth surfaces are just a joy
to paint.
Now this is not to say that the other methods are
not worthy as 1000's of years of boat building will
attest. One of the greatest things about building
your own boat is that you can choose what method
suits you best. For me the stitch and glue method
makes a lot of sense.
