After extensively
researching my options for a recreational rowing
dory, I choose to order an "Oarling" from Sam,
knowing that I would have a vessel that would be as
beautiful to look at, as she would be capable and
practical...I have not been disappointed.
Since the first day I
ordered my boat, Sam kept me apprised of her
progress, and accommodated all of my choices in
color and trim ideas. Living in the tiny village of
Skagway, Alaska means that shipping can be a
challenge. However, Sam worked with me to find the
best, and most economical option for my location.
Sam ensured that the boat arrived safely, and gave
pointers and advice on how best to use her. He also
made sure I could call him with questions if, and
when they arose.
I have named my Oarling
"Eulachon" after that little, silvery smelt-like
fish that floods SE Alaska waters every Spring. She
is a thing of beauty and drew admiring glances and
questions the very first day I picked her up at the
Ferry Terminal. She is so beautiful, I was
intimidated to just sit in her for fear that I would
get her dirty, or scratch her. However, Eulachon is
as sturdy and durable as she is fetching, and after
my first launching, I realized that she can handle a
bit of rough handling from this newbee sculler. She
is a stable craft and a delight to row, cutting
through the water effortlessly.

I intend to take Eulachon
on camping and photography excursions in the deep
saltwater fiord that borders Skagway to the south,
and in the high alpine lakes in neighboring Yukon
Territory, Canada. While she can be car-topped, I
have her on a small trailer that makes launching
much easier when single-handed. Thank you Sam for a
thing of beauty and a joy to own.
