I have built several
small boats, from 8 to 17 feet in length, this boat
being my most enterprising project to date. A couple
of the dinghies were stitch-and-glue, so I was not a
total novice when it came to this type of
construction. |
 |
Somerset was built in 1994-5, but a series of
personal problems kept me from completing it. I have
yet to finish the interior of the cabin, and because
of a 3 year lay-up under a tarp, I will have to
re-do the decks.

Sam's excellent plans were
adhered to with the exception of raising of the
water line by 1" and using the area under the births
for storage. I will have to use lead for trim
-ballast.

All
visible wood is Brazilian mahogany, and the decks
are mahogany strip- plank and WEST System.

The boat was built
exclusively by me and the only help that I accepted
was to move the hull and moving the pre-fabbed roof
into position. The cold molding of the hull bottom
and the cabin roof were done using drywall screws
that were withdrawn when the glue had set.
