I thought it would take me
200 hours to build the Egret; however, the extra
hours were all satisfying and enjoyable. Thanks to
Joel for applying the 2 part linear polyurethane
paints with spray gun and thanks to Kari for being
so supportive of my hours spent building. Thanks to
Sam and Rich for giving me space to build. Sam
Devlin will have a new set of Egret plans available
relfecting changes made with "Kari-san".
After two months of using
the boat I'm thrilled with both rowing and sailing
her. I've added water ballast in the form of 4 two
and a half gallon water jugs that I put forward for
sailing single-handed or 2 jugs forward and 2 aft
for rowing. I also added a thwart forward between
the rowing seat and forward bulkhead that keeps the
oars out of the way of the seating when sailing and
helps a lengthened snotter line lead aft over the
thwarts so I can adjust the snotter easily through a
cam cleat when sailing.
In building and using the
Egret I have renewed a love for rowing and sailing I
found as a teenager in the Sea Scout Ship "Flying
Cloud" in San Francisco Bay. As the pictures show
the South Puget Sound area is a beautiful place to
row and sail "Kari-san".
Update as of June
2008:
-
I have added 180
pounds of glassed in ballast to the boat and
built a rudder bracket that allows me to put
Honda's smallest outboard on the boat and do
hull speed at idle.
-
To keep the boat
unsinkable I added styrofoam under all the
seating. The boat survived my filling it with
seawater and tipping it over by a rope tied to
the top of the mast to see if it would sink. It
didn't sink and when I let go the rope she
righted itself and I could get in and bail her
out.
