I started hunting ducks about eight years ago on the St. Mary River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I decided to build a duck boat so we could increase our opportunities to hunt. I selected the Black Brant and ordered the plans in June 1998.

This was my first boat building project. I started building the boat in July and finished about a week before the opening day of duck season, October 3rd.

The boat was a big success, we hunted from Sault Ste. Marie to the Straits of Mackinaw. We didn't have many duck in the area this year, but the boat worked extremely well. It is very stabile and handles three hunters and equipment easily. With a fifteen horse Johnson the boat runs about 18 mph, according to my GPS.

I look forward to my next project, either a Honker for fishing or a Surf Scoter for retirement! Maybe both.
